I have been in a huge slump this month, I only finished my first book of the month the other day, Serpent and Dove (keep reading to hear my thoughts) and I started The Starless Sea yesterday! This is not a good reading month! Anyway over the past 3 months I’ve read quite a few fantasy books! I have had some ups and downs with recently released YA fantasy, I don’t know what is going on but I thought I’d do a post with mini reviews for each so I could share my excitement or mostly disappointment with you!
———————————– August to November in mini reviews ————————-
1. Tiger Queen
This was my first book by this author and I was pleasantly surprised. I really liked the premise of this book, a girl fighting for her people in the desert! I loved the fast pace and action. There was never a dull moment and it had a slow romance that warmed my insides. I definitely will be picking up A touch of Gold! The only thing was I didn’t really feel like it was completely overwhelming, I wasn’t awe struck or anything but it was still a good and well written book! Perfect for light reading!
Thank you Harper360 for sending me an ARC my way!
2. The Girl The Sea Gave Back
Sky in the deep was absolutely amazing and when I heard about this companion novel, I was quite intrigued but skeptical too! It was quite slow at the beginning but it picked up and just as I was really enjoying it, the story ENDED! The first half was so slow and when it picked up the story was coming to an end. I really enjoyed the old and new characters, I was intrigued by Tova and her past, her powers and I loved the romance well the tiny bit of it! The character development was lacking, there was no development in the romance, it just felt like it was there and gone. I wish the author built the characters and the world!
Thank you Titan Books for sending me a finished copy in exchange for an honest review.
3. A Curse So Dark and Lonely
I went in this book with no expectations. I’ve heard mixed reviews but I absolutely love Beauty and the Beast retellings and I was intrigued about Kemmerer’s take on it. I found this book slow at first, I thought it was quite unrealistic, there was a lot of plot holes well I felt that way but I really enjoyed it especially the characters, I really connected with them and I just wanted to know more despite how unrealistic the world seemed. I mean completely making up ‘Disi’ and people believing it what?!! The middle part of the story felt quite dull but it really picked up towards the end and that’s when I really wanted the next book, which I will be talking about in another blog post or rather rave about how beautiful Grey is! Overall it wasn’t completely mind blowing but it was a unique twist of Beauty and The Beast!
4. Into the Crooked Place
This one was quite interesting. The magical system was quite unique although the plot was the usual gang come together to overthrow a powerful evil but I loved the way Christo wrote it and twisted the world to make it her own like the characters and the little plot twists. I really enjoyed the first half but towards the middle and end I felt like it was being dragged on and I wanted more action, more world building just MORE! The ending was quite action packed and I’m really interested in what the sequel will hold for the characters!
Thank you Hot Key Books for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
5. Serpent and Dove
Is this the same book everyone else has been reading and raving about? I think 3 stars is just pushing it. I am so disappointed because this was one of my most anticipated releases, it had everything I loved, witches, slow burn enemies to lovers romance etc OR did it?
It started off really good, the book had A LOT of potential, shame that it wasn’t explored by the author , the characters started off great, I loved the banter and the plot but as I continued, the atmosphere became dull and the whole book felt like a repetition. All I read was about Reid and Lou. Reid and Lou. Fighting or kissing or pining. I feel like I didn’t get any glimpse of the characters alone, everything evolved around the relationship of the characters. The whole building. What world building? Character development? The characters had to no depth. I loved the plot twist, when it happened I was surprised because I didn’t expect it and I thought maybe the book has took a good turn, however the ending wasn’t too great, that ‘little plot twist’ if you know what I’m talking about (right at the end) felt random and out of nowhere. Overall I am disappointed, I mean I got the September Fairyloot box just for this book (I love the edition) but is this book really the book EVERYONE has been going crazy about?!!
6. The Merciful Crow
My biggest disappointment of 2019. This is it. I can’t believe it. While reading it, half the time I was zoning out, the other half trying to remember what I just read. The characters were dull, the main character was annoying, the plot was boring, there was no world building or character development. I wanted to DNF it but I kept going, in hope that there would be some spark or improvement but by the end I was skipping pages just so I could just get to the end. My head hurt from forcing myself to carry on reading until the end.
Sometimes there is only a few things that disappoint you in a book and there are some elements you like but this book. I did not like a single thing. The caste system and tooth magic intrigued me but I was confused most of the time. I felt no connection to the characters, the romance felt rushed and unrealistic. ugh I’m so sad because I was actually really looking forward to this book! I just didn’t connect with the characters or the world. The writing was boring yes it just kept going on and on and on, too much repetition in the plot, the author was just throwing in so much information and details but I just couldn’t imagine the world that was being described. The small bit of banter was a laugh but the bickering just got too much at the end, constant bickering between two characters, that was literally the last half of the book gone and it felt unnatural. I’m disappointed because I’ve heard so many good reviews and it just didn’t live up to the hype.
7. A Treason of Thorns
Just a pretty cover, that is all this book is for me. I don’t even know what the author was trying to accomplish. I did not see where the plot was going, the writing was boring and I couldn’t connect with the characters. I DNF 30% in. I just couldn’t continue. The magic didn’t cause me any excitement , it just felt like the author was dumping so much information, so many unnecessary details that it prevented her from actually getting to the point of the story.
Last but not least, I reread Vicious last month in preparation for Vengeful. This series oh my god is just incredible. I just can’t put how mind blown I was into words. Not a single dull moment. Full of action. I just wanted to read and not stop. Schwab’s writing is so addictive. I actually love this series more than A darker shade of Magic. This book was thrilling, I love the characters so much, Sydney, Mitch, Victor and reading about Eli’s past as well really gave us an insight of why he is as he is. This book honestly I am shook. I just want more. I NEED more!
I loved the new character Marcella, she was interesting and I wanted to see what she would do next. She was crazy! There was lots of crying for me, oh how this book broke my heart. I can’t. I kept thinking about it for days! Read this series guys, read it!
So I have been having up and downs with most of these books especially new fantasy releases. I don’t know what is going on *sigh* Have you read any of these? what were your thoughts?
Until next time,
