This compelling debut follows Marianne who is next in line to become the Viper, defender of the Twelve Isles. But the deadly and most dangerous man, the current Viper, stands in her way. She is struggling under the patriarchy and her merciless father. An adventurous tale about a girl trying to escape her villainous father and fighting and protecting those she cares about.

Firstly let me just say I’m an absolute sucker for pirate books and as soon as I heard pirates, I needed this! Luckily I got approved for a Netgalley arc! Now can we look at this cover? absolutely stunning!!! I can’t wait for my copy to come!

Viper hooked me from the beginning, it was fast paced and full of action. The world building was amazing and intriguing. All the different islands, the detail and the history. I loved the adventure Viper took me on with each Isle. We only had a small glimpse of them but each one is beautifully distinct. I can’t wait to see how the author explores the magic and isles in the future books. This book definitely kept me at the edge of my seat and kept me guessing with the little twists and turns.

This book is a dark fantasy, bloody with a brutal villain and we see just how much of a brute he is throughout the book. Adler is a great villain who never softens once. I loved how Marianne stood up to him, how firm she was with her beliefs and the way she took the punishments. She is a fierce heroine with defiance and compassion despite the violence she grew up with. I really felt connected to Marianne from the beginning, and really enjoyed her character development throughout the story. I absolutely loved the side characters too, another thing I loved is that the author refrained from a love triangle we see in most YA fantasy books.  I loved the romance, it didn‘t play a large part, their relationship is complicated. I can’t wait to see how the romance develops in the future books.

“He will make me a killer. Or he will have me killed. That is my destiny”.

The book starts off similarly to other YA fantasies but let me tell you it was amazing and enjoyable. The author makes it interesting and builds anticipation.  The pace slowed towards the middle, but it picked up and I flew through it.

Rating: ★★★★.5

I really enjoyed this story set on the seas, if you love pirates, assassins, plot twists and an action filled adventure.  I highly recommend this one to all fantasy lovers especially Sarah J. Maas fans!
